Early Education NSW

Time to invest

The NSW Government spends less on early education and care than any other state and territory. In 2011 it conducted a Review of NSW Government Funding for Early Childhood Education.

The first recommendation of the review was the NSW Government needed to increase its investment in early education and care. This has not happened.

Early education needs a larger slice of the cake.

  • Since 2011, the proportion of the NSW education budget that is spent on early education dropped from 3% to under 2%.
  • Research shows that two years of early education is the best for children. NSW children used to be able to access two years of funded early education, this has now been cut to one.
  • NSW families pay the highest fees for preschool education after subsidies in Australia.
  • NSW has the lowest rates of enrolment in a preschool program in the year before school in Australia.
